Are Boycotts, Shunning, and Shaming Corrupt?

Abstract Boycotts, shunning, and shaming sometimes wrong their targets by offering corrupt incentives that undermine significant individual aims. These tactics unjustly harm when they aim to impede living authentically, deterring them from declaring beliefs in public or pursuing important projects. They are because make willing participants these harms. subvert targets’ ambitions not allow money social pressure influence most actions. Although individuals must maintain integrity, people also have a moral responsibility those efforts. Not all uses of conflict with an anti-corruption norm. Many labour consumer boycotts likely do threaten authenticity. Other arguably pursue non-corrupt aims, such as punishment, norm reinforcement non-complicity, threatening corruption only unintended consequence. Even these, several considerations weigh against using boycotts, shaming. Using techniques for punishment is often inappropriate liberal society. Some appear at non-complicity corrupting targets. Finally, imposing risk wrongs exposed risks.
